Description
4 and 6 Oxford Street are a pair of houses, now used as a house and offices. They were refronted in the early 19th century, likely concealing an earlier house dating back to the 18th century. The front is constructed of ashlar stone laid on a raised plinth, with decorative horizontal bands marking the storeys. The roof is covered in concrete tiles, with brick stacks at the ridge and ends. The building follows an "L" shape, and has a double-fronted facade with six windows. Each house has a central door consisting of six panels, an overlight, and a late 19th-century plate-glass window above. Dormers are present in the roof, with a hipped roof to the left and a gabled roof to the right. The rear includes an 18th-century wing made of similar materials, with two early 18th-century stair turrets featuring thick glazing bars to four-pane sashes. Further two-storey wings were added in the early/mid-19th century, with concrete tile and Welsh slate roofs. The interior of No.6 features a mid-18th-century quarter-turn staircase with turned balusters. The interior of No.4 has not been inspected, but is thought to be of historic interest.
