Description

This is a house, now comprising two shops and two dwellings, dating from the early 19th century, with a refronting in 1947. The refronting concealed an earlier 17th-century house to the left (number 24) and an 18th-century house to the right (number 22). The building is constructed of squared and coursed limestone with ashlar bands and a central pilaster strip, topped by gabled concrete tile roofs. It has brick ridge and end stacks. The design incorporates a two-unit plan for number 24 and a one-unit plan with a through-passage for number 22.

The building is three storeys high and has a five-window front. Number 24, on the left, has a 20th-century door set within an 18th-century moulded stone architrave with a bracketed flat hood. It is flanked by 20th-century windows, with six-pane sashes in raised stone architraves. Number 22, on the right, features a 19th-century panelled and glazed door under a scrolled wrought-iron bracketed flat stone hood, contained within an 18th-century moulded stone architrave. It includes tripartite sashes with horns and six-pane sashes set in flush stone architraves.

A late 17th/early 18th-century wing, of two storeys and an attic with a four-window range, is situated to the rear of number 24. This wing features a brick end stack and timber lintels over the openings.

The interior of number 22 contains an 18th-century six-panelled door to the rear of the passage. Number 24 exhibits deeply chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and late 17th/early 18th-century bolection panelling in a room to the left, which also has an eared architrave to the fireplace. Inspections have been partial.
