Description
72 and 74 Oxford Street are two houses dating from the mid to late 17th century, with a refronting in the early 19th century. The house on the left, which is part of No. 74, was built in the early 19th century. No. 72 features coursed limestone rubble with squared stone at the raised eaves, a gabled concrete tile roof, and a brick ridge stack. It has a two-unit plan, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has a three-window range. There are keyed segmental arches over a 20th-century door and ground-floor windows, with timber lintels over 20th-century casements on the first floor. Mid to late 19th-century gabled roof dormers are also present. No. 74, built in early 19th century, is made of similar materials and has brick end stacks. It is two storeys and an attic high, with a one-window range, flat stone arches over a beaded six-panel door with an overlight, a mid-19th-century horned six-pane sash window, and an early 19th-century eight-pane sash window, along with a gabled half dormer. The interior of No. 72 includes a stop-chamfered beam with jewel stops, quarter-turn stairs, stone stairs leading to a cellar with an open fireplace, and a collar-truss roof with butt purlins. The buildings are included for their group value.
