Description

This barn, located 130 meters south of Broadwell Manor, is possibly from the 16th or early 17th century and was re-roofed in a matching style in the 18th or 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with dressed quoins and features a 20th-century artificial stone slate roof. The barn has stone gable copings with gabled finials on the main range and consists of four bays with square vent holes. The left bay includes a through cart entry, and the yard side has a large gabled porch projection. The porch features a wooden lintel over the cart entry and a 16th or 17th-century hollow-chamfered stone mullion window with two 4-centred arched lights and a Tudor hoodmould. Above the window is a vent slit in a chamfered surround with a trefoil head. The left side of the porch has a blocked doorway and a loft door with a stone slab ledge. An attached lower range on the left gable end of the barn is not of special architectural interest. Inside, the barn has a stone slab threshing floor and a fine triple purlin roof. The trusses include tie beams, arch-braced collars, and central struts extending from the tie-beam to the ridge. The timbers are pegged, modest in size, and feature straight gouged carpenters' marks, likely dating from the 18th or 19th century. The porch loft contains a wooden partition and a wall box with eight dove entries.
