Description
This is a farmhouse, now divided into two separate dwellings, dating to the mid-18th century. It is situated in Appleton with Eaton. The building is constructed of roughly squared limestone rubble with brick quoins and dressings, and has a gabled roof covered in old tiles. Brick stacks, incorporating stone, are positioned at each end of the building. The farmhouse has a layout in the shape of an 'L', with a wing extending to the rear right.
The two-storey farmhouse has an attic and a symmetrical five-window façade. A timber lintel is above the late 19th-century plank front door, which has an overlight. Cambered brick arches frame 20th-century casement windows on either side of the door. Similar casements on the first floor are also within flat brick arches, with brick aprons. A raised string course runs around the building, and the eaves are finished with dentilled brickwork. There are three 20th-century gabled dormers in the roof.
The rear wing is single-storey with an attic, and has a stone ridge stack.
The interior of number 17, which faces the front, features four-panelled doors, stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and ovolo-moulded jambs surrounding an open fireplace to the left. Mid-18th century cupboards are located on either side of the ground- and first-floor fireplace. The attic has old plank doors and a collar-truss roof with butt purlins.
