Description

20 Mill Street is a town house that has been converted into shops and offices. It dates from the early 18th century and features flared Flemish bond brickwork with red brick quoins and dressings, an old tile roof, and brick stacks. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys with a seven-window range. Notable architectural details include consoles supporting a stone pediment above a mid-19th century six-panelled door set in a beaded architrave. There are segmental header arches over blind windows, gauged brick cambered arches with half-H aprons leading to the cellar, and late 19th century sashes on the ground floor, along with a 20th century window to the right of the door. The first floor features late 18th century sashes and one blind window, all set beneath gauged brick flat arches with half-H aprons. The roof is gabled with ridge and right end stacks, and there is a hipped roof over the rear stairwell. The rear left side of the building has a two-storey, two-window range made of random bond brick with a half-hipped old tile roof and a late 18th century sash at the rear.

Inside, the hall features panelling from around 1730, a stone flag floor, a moulded cornice, and a quarter-turn staircase with vase balusters on an open string. The first floor has early 18th century two-panelled doors and 1730 panelling with a moulded cornice on the landing. The right side has panelling, a cornice, and a fireplace from around 1730, while the centre has straight-cut panelling and cornice, and the left side features a fireplace from the same period. A similar staircase leads to the attic, which contains ribbed and two-panelled doors.
