Description

King Alfred's Head Public House is an inn, now functioning as a public house, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of random bond yellow brick with red brick quoins and dressings, topped with a 20th-century tile roof and featuring brick stacks. The building has an L-plan layout and stands two storeys high with a five-window range. There is a concrete lintel above paired sash windows that flank a 20th-century door. The first floor showcases keyed gauged brick semi-circular arches over early 18th-century sashes, along with a string course at the impost level. The roof is gabled with stacks at the gable ends.

At the rear left, there is an early 18th-century three-storey section with a four-window range, built of Flemish bond brick featuring flared headers, and it has a hipped old tile roof with a brick ridge stack. This section has segmental arches over two second-floor and one first-floor early 18th-century sashes, as well as four late 18th-century sashes and a 20th-century door. To the right of the front, there is a three-storey cross wing made of Flemish bond yellow brick with red brick quoins and dressings. This wing has flat brick arches over mid-19th-century sashes and one early 18th-century sash on the right. Inside, the ground floor features chamfered and stopped beams.
