Description
21 and 22 Market Place is a town house and shop, now used as a shop and offices, dating from the late 16th century. Originally timber-framed with a jettied first floor, the building underwent alterations in the late 19th century when the ground floor was underbuilt in brick and the first and attic floors were re-walled in mock timber framing and tile cladding. It features an old tile roof and brick stacks. The building has a single-unit plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a two-window range. The shop front is from the 20th century.
On the first floor, there are pedimented two-light cross-windows, with similar windows without pediments above. The roof is cross-gabled with a lateral stack. The left side wall includes an attic window with two trefoil-headed lights and two narrow gable walls at the rear. No. 22, which is to the right of No. 21, has a two-storey, one-bay front made of late 19th century English bond brick, with a gabled old tile roof and a brick stack at the rear wall. It features a 20th-century door and late 19th-century sash windows on the front and right side wall.
Inside No. 21, there is an original cellar with stone steps, chamfered beams, and a dragon beam on the ground floor. The first floor has a chamfered beam and mid 18th-century panelling, along with the original roof structure. No. 22 has a two-bay arch-braced collar truss with a large jointed, chamfered, and curved post to the right, and a set of chamfered beams on the ground floor. In the rear first-floor room, there is a late 17th-century panelled door, a bolection-moulded fireplace, and adjoining panelling.
