Description
The Bear Hotel is an inn that dates back to the 17th century and was remodeled around 1720. It is constructed of red Flemish bond brick, with early 20th century limestone ashlar on the ground floor. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands three storeys tall, featuring a six-window range. Early 18th century gates lead to the entry, and the ground floor has late 18th century sash windows. The first-floor sashes are set beneath gauged brick segmental arches with keystones, while mid 19th century three-pane sashes on the second floor are topped with flat brick arches that also have keystones. The building has a moulded cornice and a central pediment with a blind half-lunette. The roof is gabled, but the stacks are not visible. Inside, the first-floor room includes a 17th century panelled dado and a timber-framed wall on the left. At the rear left, there is a three-storey section with a six-window range of Flemish bond brick featuring flared headers, segmental arches over mid 19th century sashes, and 20th century casements flanking a 20th century door.
