Description
This is a town house, now used as flats and shops, located on Wantage Market Place. The main structure dates to the 17th century, although it was substantially rebuilt around 1780. The front is constructed of flared header bond brick, with red brick quoins and dressings. The roof and chimneys are not visible. The building follows a T-shaped plan. It is three storeys high, with a five-window facade. Modern shop fronts occupy the ground floor. The first and second floors retain original sash windows with keyed stone lintels. A red brick string course and parapet course run along the top of the building, with the parapet decorated with brick panels.
The first floor of number 7 (on the left) contains a late 18th-century fireplace. Number 8 includes late 17th-century panelling on the right side, late 17th-century panelled doors, and a heavily restored 17th-century winder staircase. The original 17th-century roof structure consists of a central collar truss flanked by timber-framed closed trusses.
A two-story wing at the rear of number 8 dates to the 17th century, but has been altered with 18th-century brick walling, a gabled roof covered in modern tiles, and a brick ridge stack. A 17th-century four-light casement window is set into the left side wall of this wing, and a three-bay queen-post roof remains. Evidence suggests that this rear wing was built after the front facade, which was likely originally timber-framed.
