Description

The buildings at 40 and 42 East Street, Helens Street, represent an 18th-century structure built upon an earlier foundation. The building is two storeys high with an attic space. It has a tile roof punctuated by two hipped dormers, each featuring casement windows. The walls are primarily grey brick with red brick detailing, set upon a rubble base that projects outwards. A brick dentil cornice runs along the top of the facade. There are four windows in total, each framed by red brick rusticated architraves and surmounted by stucco keystones. A decorative band separates the ground floor from the first. The ground floor features three windows and two doorways, sharing the same architraves and keystones as the windows. The doorways are fitted with six-panel doors topped by rectangular fanlights, each with a single stone step leading up to it. Nos. 2 to 60 (even) are historically grouped together.
