Description
These are almshouses located at 23 to 37 Mill Street, built in 1867 by J.P. Spencer for the Town Commissioners. The buildings are constructed of Flemish bond brick with limestone ashlar bands and feature an old tile roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles and brick stacks. The row consists of "one-up, one-down" cottages with a rear outshut, arranged over two storeys and comprising an eight-window range that ascends Mill Street, with every two bays stepped up.
Each cottage has shallow pointed arches over plank doors, and above the doors, there are pointed tympanum arches made of alternating brick and ashlar voussoirs, which are pierced with roundels. The windows are two-light casements with cusped heads, and there are ashlar storey bands beneath the first-floor casements. The gabled roof features raised ashlar coping and ridge stacks. The front is enclosed by a terraced brick wall with piers and ashlar steps. The interior has not been inspected.
