Description

Martha’s Kitchen is a mid-18th century house, now operating as a restaurant, located in Couching Street, Watlington. The house is constructed of random bond brick with red brick dressings, topped with an old-tile roof and featuring a brick stack on the left end. It has a three-unit plan and a symmetrical three-window facade. Segmental arches are above the 20th-century front door and windows, and also above a blind window bearing a fire insurance plaque over the door. A 20th-century bow window has been added to the right of the entrance. A heavy timber lintel covers a carriageway entrance to the right. The eaves are dentilled. Inside, there is an oak bressumer beam over the open fireplace, with salt boxes. The first floor has chamfered beams and a stud partition. A winder staircase leads to the attic, which contains a two-bay post and pad roof truss with clasped purlins.
