Description
Apsley is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with a 17th-century range at the rear left. The front is made of grey brick, featuring red brick quoins and dressings, and has a gabled old tile roof with a brick stack at the left end. The house has a two-unit front range, is two storeys high, and includes a four-window range. The entrance has a moulded eared architrave with a pulvinated frieze above a six-panelled door. There are gauged brick flat arches over horned sash windows, a red brick storey band, and dentilled eaves. The two rear wings have rendered walls and gabled old tile roofs; the 17th-century rear left wing was originally timber-framed and has a stack adjoining the front range. Inside, there are mid-19th-century doors and 18th-century six- and two-panelled doors. The hall to the right features quarter-turn stairs with a panelled spandrel and turned balusters on a closed string. The rear left range has chamfered beams, an ogee-stopped bressumer over an open fireplace with an adjoining spice cupboard, and exposed first-floor wall plates.
