Description
A group of three houses, numbered 55 to 59, located on the west side of Northfield End. Primarily dating to the early 19th century, they form three sides of a square, with a timber-framed structure visible in the rear facade.
Number 55 features an early 19th-century facade of stucco with a bracketed moulded eaves cornice and an old tiled hipped roof. It has two storeys and two windows, each with three lights and glazing bars. Ground-floor windows have cambered head linings. A central door is framed by fluted pilasters and decorative motifs above.
Number 59 is a recessed part of the range, with a brick underbuilt ground floor and stucco above, capped by an old tiled roof. It has two storeys and a door with a small hood and a small window with leaded glazing. The window openings, particularly those of the first floor, are likely original.
Number 57 is recessed and continuous with number 59, featuring a very small first-floor window to the rear. The street-facing part of number 57 has a later 19th-century facade of flint with red brick dressings and a stucco gable end with a carved bargeboard, two storeys, and an attic. It includes elaborate gables and hoods above modern casement windows. This later section is an integral part of the overall range.
The buildings are part of a wider group that also includes numbers 45 and Meeting House Cottage, numbers 51 to 61 (odd), Portland Cottage with its garden wall, number 46 (Magnolia Cottage), Northlea and its former coach house (Easby House), and numbers 70 to 84 (even) opposite.
