Description
The Church of St. Lawrence is a Grade II* listed building located in Toot Baldon. It dates from the late 12th century and 13th century, with restoration carried out in 1865 by Henry Woodyer. The church is constructed from limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features plain-tile roofs. It includes an aisled nave, a chancel, a north transept, and a south porch.
The chancel has been largely rebuilt and features a three-light east window and a two-light south window, both in the 19th-century Decorated style, while the lancets on the north and south sides may have been re-set. The south transept contains a three-light window with late 13th-century intersecting tracery. The nave's south wall is likely also rebuilt, showcasing Perpendicular-style windows flanking the porch. The 13th-century west wall has a two-light window with Y-tracery situated between small lancets and features a rebuilt double bellcote on the gable. The north wall of the nave includes a Romanesque doorway, a two-light square-headed 15th-century window, and a 19th-century copy. A small 19th-century vestry extends from the north aisle.
Inside, the chancel boasts an elaborate painted arcaded reredos and complete 19th-century oak fittings, including a screen styled after the 13th century. The north arcade of the four-bay nave features early 13th-century stiff-leaf and scalloped capitals, while the south arcade has moulded capitals. All roofs date from the 19th century. The stained glass in the east window, created around 1875, is by Harwood of Frome Selwood, and there are four additional windows from 1890 by J.P. St. Aubyn.
