Kitchen Block Of Townlands Hospital

The Kitchen Block of Townlands Hospital, dating from the late 18th century, consists of three ranges surrounding a courtyard and is part of the former workhouse. The northern range is two storeys plus an attic, while the wings on either side are each two storeys. The northern range features five bays and is constructed of red brick. The first floor includes an open arcaded loggia, above which is a band of blue bricks. There is a tablet above the arch of the fourth bay that reads 'This House was erected AD 1790'. The first floor has two sash windows, a flank window that is painted to resemble a sash window, a casement window, and one modern metal casement window, all separated by chains of blue bricks. The roof has four dormer windows, three of which retain their original glazing bars. The wings on the left and right are made of chequered brick and have been significantly altered in terms of window openings. The eastern range also features two modern gabled porches, one of which is stocked, extending through two storeys.
