Description

Fleet Hospital is a building that originally served as a workhouse, constructed in 1837 and enlarged in 1851, 1867, 1871, and in the 20th century. It is made of brown brick with red brick dressings and features hipped slate roofs with a single ridge and lateral stacks on the east range. The structure consists of a long, low east range that is attached to a tripartite range on the west, which has an octagonal lantern above the point where the three radiating ranges meet.

The east range has a central two and a half storey section with five bays, flanked by two-storey, nine-bay wings that are slightly set back, with the outer two bays on each side projecting forward. The building has a small plinth, painted first-floor bands, and painted quoins. The central three bays project slightly and feature a central doorway with an overlight, a plain doorcase, and a pedimented hood. This doorway is flanked by two plain sash windows, with single small pivotal 20th-century casements to the right and left, followed by six plain sashes on each side, the outermost of which are slightly smaller. Each of the outer projecting bays contains two plain sashes. Above, there are five plain sashes with longer plain sashes on either side, and seven plain sashes beyond on each side, with small narrow windows between the third and fourth bays from the outer bays. The central range has five small plain sashes above. All windows have cambered heads with flush wedge lintels, some of which are painted. The rear ranges have similar plain sashes and some low 20th-century extensions, along with a central 20th-century octagonal lantern.
