Description
Mansion House is a house that has been converted into a restaurant, dating from the early 18th century. It is built of red brick with some painted ashlar dressings and features a plain tiled roof with a tripartite stack at the rear. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a five-bay front that includes ground and first floor bands, the latter of which rises over the central doorway. The central bay projects slightly and is topped by a pediment.
Five steps lead up to the central doorway, which is flanked by iron railings. At the basement level, there are two two-light glazing bar casements. The doorway itself has a plain doorcase with decorative brackets supporting a hood with a cornice, a panelled reveal, a decorated glazing bar overlight, and a partially glazed and panelled door. On either side of the doorway are two glazing bar sashes, with five glazing bar sashes above. All windows feature flush, wedge brick lintels, and there are two hipped dormers with glazing bar sashes.
To the right of the doorway, there is a blue plaque indicating that Sir Norman Angell, an author and lecturer who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1933, was born here. Inside, the hallway is fielded panelled and is flanked by rooms that also feature fielded panelling, shutters, window seats, and fluted giant order pilasters beside the fireplaces. The fireplaces date from the late 19th century in the west room and around 1930 in the east room, with an acanthus centre above. The early 18th-century staircase has four flights, turned banisters with square knops, panelled newels, a dado, and a moulded handrail.
