Description
The Halifax Building Society, originally listed as the Midland Bank, is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built in 1786, with later additions from the late 19th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring ashlar and colourwashed ashlar dressings, along with some rendered areas. The roof is concealed behind a coped parapet, which has a painted band running beneath two rendered gable stacks.
The structure has three storeys and a basement, with a three-bay front where the central bay projects slightly. This central bay is topped by a pediment that contains a decorative datestone, and there are painted bands on the first and second floors. The basement features two 20th-century glazing bar fixed lights with concrete lintels.
A late 19th-century rusticated ashlar porch is located at the entrance, which has a doorway with a semi-circular head, a decorative fanlight, and a keystone. The porch is flanked by pilasters on tall plinths and has an entablature above. Each return wall of the porch has a single glazing bar sash window. The porch is also flanked by single Venetian windows with plain sashes, and there are three glazing bar sashes on the upper floors. All windows are adorned with pointed flush wedge lintels and keystones.
Inside, the original hall features a dentillated cornice. A room to the west of the doorway has two alcoves, each with imposts, keystones, and fielded panels. Fluted pilasters flank the windows, similar to another ground floor room. The first floor south windows are fitted with eared architraves. There are remnants of an 18th-century staircase upstairs, which includes moulded pendant newels, stick bannisters, and a moulded handrail. A fireplace located at the rear of the ground floor has a dentillated cornice and sides decorated with foliate drops.
