Description
Hales Hospital is a former workhouse, built in 1764, which has undergone significant additions and remodelling in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick and features hipped roofs covered with smut pantiles. It has an H-shaped plan with two courtyards.
In the south courtyard, the ground floor has sash windows with glazing bars, some featuring segmental heads and others with flat gauged arches. The first floor includes 2-light casements and horizontal sliding sashes, all with glazing bars. The return wings on the south-east and south-west sides have wide rubbed brick elliptical arches with inset sash windows that also have glazing bars and architraves. The openings in the south walls have been significantly altered. There is a platband at the first floor level.
The north courtyard contains sashes and casements with glazing bars, including some horizontal sliding sashes. The openings here have rubbed arches, with some featuring cambered soffits. Symmetrically placed ridge chimney stacks are present, with one stack on the east range straddling the ridge and featuring an arched opening between the shafts and a pedimented cap. Additionally, there is a later two-storey range along the north side of the north courtyard, which incorporates some 18th and 19th-century work.
