Description

The Iron Column, located at TM 3923 9660, is a milestone dated 1831, designed by architect J.T. Patience. It features a cast iron column with two stages, standing on a base made of gault brick and limestone. The column has a conical cast iron roof that is concealed by a castellated parapet and is octagonal in shape. Each face of the column displays two tall recessed Gothick panels, which are adorned with cusped and crocketted gables. Although much of the applied lettering has been lost, the north-east face still shows the letters "RAVENINGHAM TO 111," while the north north-west face indicates "4½."
