Description

Raveningham Hall is a country house built in the late 18th century for Sir Edmund Bacon, the 8th and 9th Baronet, who died in 1820. The house underwent remodelling in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with early 20th-century work done by architect Somers Clark. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped roof covered with black glazed pantiles. The building has three storeys and attics, arranged in a symmetrical south front with seven bays in a 2:3:2 configuration, where the central three bays are slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, and the second floor has smaller, square openings. A central three-bay portico supported by Tuscan columns is present, along with a platband at the first floor level and a modillion cornice below the eaves parapet. There are four pedimented attic dormers and a circular window with a keyed surround in the pediment.

The north front mirrors the south front's 2:3:2 arrangement and features two-storey canted bay windows flanking the central three-bay pediment. The ground floor was brought forward in the early 20th century to create a central porch with a projecting pedimented stone door surround, a panelled reveal, and a moulded architrave around the doorway, with the pediment extending above the parapet. The flanking sashes have glazing bars, and the outer bays, which support the canted bays, contain three windows each, with the central sash being taller and featuring a semi-circular arched head with a keystone. The house has four main chimney stacks that are symmetrically placed, and there are some blind second floor window openings on the east and west sides.

Inside, the hall boasts a notable 18th-century cantilever staircase with a groin-vaulted ceiling and a centerpiece decorated with honeysuckle motifs. The interiors have been extensively remodelled, featuring 20th-century plasterwork designed in the style of the 18th century.
