Description

Castell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century and later, which was restored in the mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with red brick gables and additions, topped by a steeply pitched pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and attics, arranged in an L-shaped plan, with the main facade facing southeast.

The facade includes three widely spaced windows set in an exposed timber frame with colourwashed infill, featuring 4-light casements with transoms. The gables have polygonal brick angle shafts, and the lower storey is partly underbuilt in brickwork. There is an off-centre doorway to the right, topped by a rectangular fanlight above a battened door. The first floor jetties out, with casements of 5 lights in the centre and 3 lights on the sides. Tension braces are visible in the studs.

An off-centre axial chimney stack has linked lozenge-shaped shafts, with one shaft on the north side displaying decorative brickwork on a moulded base. The south gable shows tumbling at the base and has an internal chimney stack with lozenge-shaped shafts. An attic casement with glazing bars is located in the gable. The north gable features polygonal angle shafts and a large blocked ground floor window with a 6-light mullion and transom frame, set in a chamfered reveal with stuccoed ashlaring. The brickwork on the gable is laid in English bond with diaper pattering.

At the rear, there is a red brick wing with segmental-headed casements and a 2-light attic dormer on the southwest side. The northwest angle has catslide lean-tos, along with a flat-roofed tile-hung projection. Inside, the farmhouse includes bridging and tie beams with large chamfers and broach stops, as well as first floor joists with stepped run-out chamfers.
