Description
Grove Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It features a timber frame that is rendered, with red brick gables, and has a later red brick wing at the rear. The building has steeply pitched pantiled roofs and stands two storeys high with attics. It has a lobby entrance plan and a triple-pile projection at the rear, which consists of two separate builds.
The south facade has four widely spaced bays with 19th-century three-light casements that include transoms. The first floor is jettied and rendered over. There is an off-centre two-storey gabled porch and a large axial stack aligned with the porch, featuring grouped polygonal shafts on a moulded base. The red brick crow-stepped gables have polygonal angle shafts, and there is a large external chimney stack with weathered offsets on the western gable.
The east gable displays ovolo moulded mullion and transom windows topped with brick pediments, consisting of six lights with stay-bars on the ground floor, four lights on the first floor, and three lights in the attic. To the north, there are two rendered and colourwashed gabled wings, one of which, opposite the south porch, is likely an original stair turret. Infilling the space between these wings is a later two-storey wing with a shaped red brick gable to the north that includes an internal chimney stack. The building has 19th and 20th-century casements and two blocked oval attic lights in the shaped gable, along with a later pantiled lean-to in the north-west angle.
Although the interior has been much modernised, it retains a good late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters.
