Description

Grove Cottage is a house dating from the late medieval period, with later remodelling in the mid-to-late 19th century. It was originally timber-framed and retains a cruck-framed structure to the rear. The exterior is roughcast, with a gabled roof covered in old tiles; a brick stack rises from the ridge. Originally a hall house, it is now arranged in an L-shape, with a two-bay front-left wing. The left gable wing has 20th-century doors and windows. A 20th-century door provides access to the right side of the one-storey and attic rear range. The interior of the rear wing features a double-chamfered raised cruck and two ogee-stopped beams supporting an inserted 17th-century floor. The first floor was not inspected, but is likely to be of interest. The building formerly operated as The Black Lion public house.
