Description

This is a milestone located approximately 20 meters west of The Toll House on Dorchester High Street. It dates from the mid-18th century and is made of limestone. The stone has a slightly tapering oval shape with a rounded top. It is inscribed with the distances to various locations: "LONDON/49/HENLEY/14/ABINGDON/?/OXFORD/?". The Arabic numerals have been re-cut over the original Roman numerals. The road where this milestone stands was turnpiked in 1736.
