Description
Sotwell House is a house that features a mid-18th century front, likely built onto a structure from the 17th century, with a 20th-century addition on the right side. The building is constructed of grey brick with red brick dressings and has an old plain-tile roof with lead ridges, hipped to the right. It has a brick ridge stack located to the left of the center and a brick end stack on the right. The house is two stories tall and has a four-window range. A 20th-century glazed door with a decorative fan is set in a round-arched recessed opening to the right of the center. All openings feature tripartite sashes with glazing bars and cambered brick heads, except for a 16-pane sash with a round-arched top located on the first floor to the right of the center. There is a flat red brick band and a plain parapet at the eaves. The interior is noted for having extensive beaming at the rear. The 20th-century addition is two stories high and has a single-window design, matching the grey brick and red brick dressings of the main house. Historically, it is said that Arthur, Prince of Wales, stayed here when his auditor, Robert Court, lived at Mackney. The site is also noted to have been moated.
