BRIGHTWELL CUM SOTWELL THE STREET SU5890 (North side) Sotwell 6/37 Sotwell House 09/04/52 II

House. Mid C18 front to probably C17 structure, with C20 addition to right. Grey brick with red brick dressings; old plain-tile roof with lead ridges, hipped to right; brick ridge stack to left of centre, brick end stack to right. 2-storey, 4-window range. C20 glazed door with decorative fan to round-arched recessed opening to right of centre. Tripartite sashes with glazing bars and cambered brick heads to all openings except 16-pane sash with round-arched top to first floor right of centre. Flat red brick band and plain parapet to eaves. Interior noted as having extensive beaming to rear. C20 two-storey, single-window addition to right. Grey brick with red brick dressings. History: Arthur, Prince of Wales, is said to have stayed here when his auditor, Robert Court, lived at Mackney. Moated site. (V.C.H.: Berkshire, Vol.3, 1923, p.508).
