Description

The Lower Shiplake War Memorial is a stone monument dedicated to those who served in the First World War, built around 1923, with updates made to honor the fallen from the Second World War.

The memorial is made of granite and features bronze plaques. It is located in the south-east corner of a small green at the intersection of the A4155 and Station Road in Lower Shiplake.

The base of the monument is rough-hewn stone, consisting of a battered plinth that stands on a three-stepped base. The plinth is made of blocks and has four faces. The eastern and western faces each display a bronze plaque with the names of the fallen. The west-facing plaque commemorates the men of Shiplake who died in the First World War, listing their names and stating, "Their name liveth for evermore." The east-facing plaque honors those who lost their lives in the Second World War, also listing names and including the same phrase.

In total, there are 53 names inscribed on the plaques. Atop the plinth is a shaft approximately 2 meters high, supported by a chamfered base. The shaft is square in cross-section and features inset carved panels. The top of the shaft has a pair of volutes and supports a stone wheel-cross with Celtic style carving. Both the shaft and the wheel-cross are made of smoothed granite.
