Description
Shiplake College is a country house, now functioning as a school, built in 1890 by architect Ernest George for Robert Harrison. The building is constructed of red brick featuring a grey brick diaper pattern, and it likely has stone slate roofs with brick stacks. It is designed in the Tudor style and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a total of ten windows across its façade.
The central entrance tower rises three storeys and includes a two-centred arched doorway to the right, which is framed by a recessed porch and features a studded door. The windows are irregularly arranged and primarily consist of wooden mullions and transoms. The roof is complex with gabled dormers, and there are decorative brick stacks. The rear elevation is symmetrical, highlighted by a central double-height bay window with stone mullions and transoms, along with a glazed door. Flanking the bay are four double-height mullion and transom windows, two on each side. There are cross wings to both the left and right, each with vaulted loggias at the corners.
Inside, the building features an open-well newel staircase. The dining hall boasts an arch-braced roof and a stone hood over the fireplace, while a wooden screen leads to the cross-passage, which contains late 19th-century stained glass. The common room, which was formerly the dining room, is panelled in oak and has a stone hooded fireplace supported by marble columns.
