Description

The St Cleer War Memorial is a First World War memorial, likely built in the early 1920s, with an addition made after the Second World War. It is prominently located in the village on Well Lane, next to the east churchyard wall of the Church of St Clarus, which is a Grade I listed building.

The memorial features a rough-hewn, rectangular stone base topped by a square, tapering plinth and a tapering granite shaft that rises to a wheel-head cross. The cross includes a central stone boss and additional bosses at the four compass points. The front (east) face of the plinth is inscribed in black lettering with a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the Great War from 1914 to 1918 and the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. The south face lists the names of the Fallen from the First World War, while the north face is inscribed with "1939-1945" followed by the names of those who served.

The memorial is set within a small enclosure, which is bordered on three sides by dwarf walls made of slatestone rubble with chamfered coping, topped with decorative iron railings. The churchyard wall, which is also Grade II listed, forms the rear (west) boundary of the enclosure.
