Description
St Cleer's Well is a holy well located on St Cleer Well Lane, dating from the late 15th century and restored in 1864. It is constructed from granite ashlar and squared granite rubble, featuring a granite roof with gable ends at both the front and rear.
The structure is a small single-storey building set on a hollow-chamfered stone plinth. It has a rectangular plan with an open front and sides. The front and each side display an arcade of two round arches supported by polygonal piers with roll-mouldings and moulded abaci. The front gable end includes a central image niche flanked by pinnacles on either side and one at the apex of the gable. At the rear, there are two low round arches, and inside the building, a triangular recess serves as a rere-arch. An image niche with pinnacles is also present on the outside of the rear wall.
Inside, the well is located at the rear on a granite floor. The roof features a stone vault with lateral ribs that spring from inner chamfered shafts, each with a plain abacus on the right and left sides. The arches of the arcades are hollow-chamfered on the inside. The rear wall has an image niche with a segmental head to the right and a small corbelled niche to the left. Surrounding the front and sides is a granite wall about one metre high, extending approximately six metres along the front and four metres to each side, topped with moulded coping.
