Description
The Shanklin War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920, designed by E C Cooper of Shanklin, with additions made for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone with ragstone walls.
The memorial features a Latin cross with a sword of sacrifice carved in relief on the front face. This cross rises from a corniced pedestal that has recessed panels, all set on a two-stepped base. The south face of the pedestal displays the inscription: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SHANKLIN WHO FELL IN THE WARS 1914-18 – 1939-45." The names of those who fell in the First World Wars are inscribed on the other faces, and additional names are recorded on a stone block attached to the foot of the north face of the pedestal.
The memorial is located within its own enclosed area, which features crazy paving and is surrounded by shrubbery. In front of the memorial, there is a capped ragstone wall with a set of later metal gates that provide access. These gates are marked with the initials 'SH' and 'RH' in memory of two brothers who served in the Second World War. Behind the cross, there is a curved stone memorial wall commemorating the Second World War, which was added in 1995.
