Description
Daish's Hotel is a purpose-built hotel located on High Street in Shanklin, with its earliest section constructed in 1833 by Jeremiah Rayner. This original part is made of stone rubble and features a slate roof, standing two storeys high with four windows. The second bay from the left is recessed, while the fourth bay has a larger projecting gable. Each bay is topped with gables that have stone coping and kneelers, and the windows are triple casements. The right-hand bay boasts a four-light canted bay window that extends through both floors, adorned with crenellation above and panels between the floors. The entrance features a 19th-century door framed by Corinthian pilasters.
To the north-west, there is a mid-19th-century bar extension designed in the Italianate style. This extension is made of painted brick with a stuccoed front and a slate roof, also standing two storeys high with three windows. It has an elaborate parapet with decorative panels and scrolls, along with end pilasters. The ground floor features three sash windows with vertical glazing bars, horns, and eaved and fluted architraves, as well as vermiculated pilasters and four round-headed arches leading to the bar.
A late 19th-century taller stone extension with brick dressings and a slate roof is located to the north-west. This extension rises three storeys and has four gables, with sash windows, some of which are in two-storey canted bays and a square belvedere. The interior of the earliest section includes a stick staircase with a baluster-finial and scrolled tread ends, along with a curved internal bar front near the reception area. Daish's Hotel is noted as the earliest surviving hotel in Shanklin, having opened in the early 19th century.
