Description
The Church of St. Margaret is a Grade II listed building located in Harpsden. It dates back to the 12th century, with 14th-century windows. In 1848, Benjamin Ferrey extended the nave and added a north tower and aisle. Henry Woodyer restored the chancel in 1879. A 20th-century school building is attached to the south.
The church is constructed of flint with stone dressing and features a plain tile roof. It showcases an Early English architectural style, with a four-bay nave and chancel, along with a north aisle and tower. The timber frame gabled porch has a plain tile roof and a 19th-century studded door on the left. To the left of the porch, there is a three-light Perpendicular window and a trefoil-headed lancet. The tower has two stages, with a single lancet window on the first stage and a two-light Early English louvred opening on the second stage, topped by a plain parapet and a pyramidal tiled roof with a weather vane. There are two-light and three-light lancets to the left of the tower, and a studded plank door with a two-centred head leads to the vestry. The east window of the chancel features intersecting tracery, while the south side has four 19th-century Early English windows in the nave and two Early English windows in the chancel. A round-headed doorway from the 12th century leads into the nave.
Inside, there is a Romanesque font that is round with fluted decoration and cable-moulding, along with reset medieval brasses. The nave has an 18th-century queen-post roof.
