Description
This building, comprising The Book House and The Pied Pedaller, likely began as two houses with shops and living accommodation. It probably dates from the 17th century, but has an early 18th-century front facade and later alterations. The building has a rendered plinth, is constructed of grey brick with red brick dressings, and has an old plain-tile roof with brick internal stacks at the rear.
It is a two-storey building with a five-window front. There is a six-panel door with a segmental brick arch and flat hood on the left side of centre. The right-hand side has a 20th-century shop front with a central glazed double door, flanked by plate-glass shop windows. Four-pane sash windows with brick flat arches are present on the ground and first floors to the left and to the left of centre. Wooden casements with segmental brick relieving arches are situated on the first floor in the centre, to the right of centre, and on the right-hand side. A dog-tooth course runs along the base of a plain parapet. The ground floor interior consists of 20th-century shops.
