Description
A cottage and reading room, now a shop, dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a further extension in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with some flared headers, timber framing with brick infill, and an old plain-tile roof with a brick stack. It has a 2-unit plan, extended to the rear.
The main frontage is one storey plus attic, with a single-storey shop to the left. The cottage front (to the right) is in chequer brick with a dentil eaves course and segmental arches, featuring two 2-light plank-shuttered casements flanking a central window which replaced a former doorway. There are two gabled dormers. The shop front is of plain brickwork with two large plank-shuttered casements. A shared central stack is present. The right end wall has a timber-framed gable which returns to a 20th-century rear extension.
The building was part of the estate constructed around 1760 for the 1st Earl Harcourt.
