Description
A pair of cottages and a shop, dating from the mid-18th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with some flared brick headers, timber framing with brick infill, and an old plain-tile roof with a brick stack. The original layout featured two units, later extended. The front has one storey plus an attic. The cottage fronts contain two windows each, partly in chequer brick, featuring a dentil eaves course and segmental arches. Each window has three 2-light casements, some with plank shutters. A central window in the shop (number 30A) replaces a former doorway. The front of number 31 is in 20th-century brick. A shop bay added to the left is probably from the 19th century, but has been altered and now has a wide segmental-arched window. The cottages have two gabled dormers each and share a central stack. The right end wall was formerly fully timber framed and retains principal timbers. A higher extension to the rear of number 30A has been added. The interiors were not inspected. The building is part of the estate village built circa 1760 by the 1st Earl Harcourt and is included for group value.
