Description

The Summertown War Memorial features a three-stepped octagonal base topped by an octagonal plinth. On the western side of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "IN THE WAY/ OF RIGHTEOUSNESS/ IS LIFE/ AND IN/ THE PATHWAY/ THEREOF/ THERE IS NO DEATH," which is a quote from Proverbs 12:28. The eastern side of the plinth has another inscription that states: "IN PROUD/ AND GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF/ SUMMERTOWN WHO/ NOBLY GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR KING/ AND COUNTRY AND/ RIGHTEOUSNESS/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ 1939 – 1945." Above the plinth, there is an octagonal tapering shaft topped with a Latin cross that features a Sword of Sacrifice.
