Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Gregory and St Augustine is a private chapel built between 1910 and 1911 by Ernest Newton for Apsley Paddox, an adjacent house. It features a rendered brick exterior and a Cumberland slate roof with gabled ends. The church has a nave with a gallery at the west end, which is over a narthex accessed from the south side. In the 20th century, a large extension, likely for parish rooms, was added to the east end.

The east gable end showcases a 4-light window on the ground floor and a large 6-light gallery window with a segmental arch head, tile hoodmould, cill, a diamond-shaped brick ventilator, and a small stone cross at the gable. The north and south sides have 4-light windows, all featuring leaded panes. The west end of the south side includes a porch with splayed ashlar sides that are corbelled at the top, supporting a canopy roof, and simple boarded double doors with leaded lights. An octagonal cupola, made of wood and lead, is located on the ridge near the east end.

Inside, the church is remarkably complete, showcasing fine simple joinery. It has a plaster tunnel-vault ceiling with moulded tie-beams and a wall plate. There is a panelled and glazed screen under the gallery at the west end, topped with a tall wooden balustrade. At the east end, a baldachino features panels of Spanish leather and a carved wooden canopy, along with a wooden Communion rail and sedilia.
