Description
Wolvercote War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in the churchyard to the west of the Grade II-listed Church of St Peter, near the Grade II-listed Church Hall and Old Church House.
The memorial is made of granite and features a Celtic wheel-head cross with a tapering shaft. The east face of the cross-head and part of the shaft are decorated with a knot work design carved in relief. The shaft stands on a tapering plinth, which has a square block foot on top of a chamfered square base. All the lettering on the memorial is made with lead.
The inscription on the east face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF WOLVERCOTE/ WHO NOBLY GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918." The names of 53 men who died are listed on the remaining three faces of the plinth.
