Description

The gatepiers and walls to the east of The Lodge, located at No. 304 Woodstock Road, serve as the entrance and boundary from Middle Way and also enclose its walled garden. They were constructed around 1830, with some elements added around 1862 and further modifications in the mid-19th century.

The gatepiers are rendered and whitewashed, featuring moulded square stone caps. The southern pair, dating from around 1830, includes reveals for narrow carriage gates and neckings at the front. The northern pair, added around 1862, accommodates larger access and has a rendered wall between them that includes a break for a tradesman's entrance.

The wall adjacent to The Lodge is made of red brick and has been partially rebuilt where it was once attached to the house. The wall to the south is faced with coursed rubblestone on the road side but has an inner face of brick laid on edge in a rat-trap bond style. It features rounded coping tiles and stands approximately 2 meters high, with 20th-century buttresses added to the inside of the garden wall.

These gatepiers and walls are part of a group with The Lodge, which is situated close to Middle Way.
