Description
Oriel Cottage is a house, likely dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble and has a steeply pitched tile roof with a brick ridge stack and a brick stack at the right end, both resting on stone bases. The house is arranged with a three-unit plan and has a single storey plus an attic. A 20th-century door is located on the right side. To the right is a three-light wooden mullioned window with ovolo moulded mullions and a lintel, also ovolo moulded. To the left are two two-light windows and a single-light window, all featuring wooden lintels. The three-light and two two-light attic casements have 20th-century wooden lintels and wrought iron fasteners. Inside, a staircase has a straight flight and a quarter turn. The main room contains stop-chamfered spine beams, a chamfered bressumer and a bread oven. Plank doors are also present. Oriel Cottage is recorded as the site of the former workhouse, first documented in 1736.
