Description

Killowen House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from around 1550. It is constructed of regular coursed ironstone rubble with ironstone quoins. The house has two brick stacks to the ends, each with stone bases, and a tile roof, hipped to the left and gabled to the right. It has a U-shaped plan. The front elevation, facing the road, is single storey plus attic, with a three-window range. A doorway on the right has a 4-centred arch, a square hood mould, and carved label stops. It contains a pointed arched, panelled door with three lights. To the right of the door is a three-light stone mullioned window with a hood mould and label stops, and to the left, a similar three-light mullioned window. A wooden lintel is visible to the left, indicating a cellar. The attic has a three-light stone outlined window flanked by two narrower, two-light windows. All windows have small opening casements, wrought iron catches and springs, and are painted white. The rear of the house has a covered porch between the wings, which incorporates a re-used two-light window from the 13th century. Nesting boxes are built into the wing on the left. Inside, cruck blades are visible on the first-floor landing. The roof shows evidence of smoke blackening. Other interior features include stop-chamfered beams, stone flag floors, chamfered bressumers, a staircase with a straight flight including winders, and a stone fireplace with a 4-centred head. The doors have wrought iron hinges and catches. Formerly known as Titcombe's Farm.
