Description
The Leys Cottage is a small house dating from the mid-17th century, with a 20th-century extension. It is constructed of coursed squared marlstone, featuring some ashlar dressings, and has a thatched roof with rebuilt gable stacks. The original single-unit plan has been extended, resulting in a structure that is two storeys plus an attic, along with a single storey.
The street-facing side of the main section includes a three-light stone-mullioned window with a label and a small cellar window with a chamfered stone surround. The right gable wall features a parapet with moulded projecting kneelers and has another three-light mullioned window on the first floor, as well as a renewed casement window in the gable. The rear of the cottage has an old three-light casement window and a two-light stone-mullioned cellar window. Part of the eaves rises over the stairwell, which has three small windows, two of which have old wooden frames and lattice glazing. To the left, there is a thatched 20th-century bay that occupies the site of part of the original house, and a flat-roofed extension is connected to the right rear corner. The right gable wall bears a small scratched date of 1677, although this is unlikely to indicate the actual date of construction.
Inside, the cottage features a small inglenook fireplace, a winder stair, a stop-chamfered beam, and heavy purlins. The 20th-century bay includes a large open fireplace, which has been partly reduced and was once an external feature. Additionally, there are two six-panel doors, now internal, that have well-crafted fielded panels.
