Description
Callaly Cottage is a house dating from 1624, with probable extensions from the late 17th century to early 18th century, and further extensions in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed squared marlstone with wooden lintels and features a thatched roof with brick stacks. The building has a three-unit plan consisting of two main sections and additional subsidiary ranges. It stands two storeys plus an attic on one side and one storey plus an attic on the other.
The taller section on the right has two windows and a chamfered plinth that includes a cellar window, along with a datestone. The windows are 18th-century casements with leaded glazing. The lower bay on the left features a six-panel door, a 20th-century bay window, and a half dormer with a three-light casement. The roof extends over a subsidiary range on the far left, which has two double doors and a 20th-century dormer, partially rebuilt and covering a former cart entry. The roof of the higher bays has flanking stacks and a gable parapet on the right.
The right gable wall has a small ancient wood-framed window and shows traces of a stone-mullioned window in the gable. The left gable of the higher section features a small three-light wood-mullioned window with leaded glazing. The rear of the building has additional leaded casements, and facing the cart entry is a small re-used early 14th-century window with two cusped lights, Y-tracery, and a hood mould. At the back of the lower bay is a small wing and a single-storey 20th-century extension.
Inside, the 1624 range contains two crossbeams with wide stop-chamfers and a fine early 18th-century stone bolection-mould fireplace with a moulded stone mantelshelf. The first floor has chamfered intersecting beams, and there is a winder stair leading from the first floor to the attics.
