Description
The Old House is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations likely made in the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared marlstone, featuring some ashlar dressings and wooden lintels, topped with a Welsh-slate roof and brick gable stacks. The building has a three-unit plan with a rear wing and stands two storeys plus an attic.
The front of the house has a three-window layout, with the two bays on the left being higher, possibly raised in the 18th century. These bays feature stone-mullioned ground-floor windows with four and three lights, both having labels, flanking a later doorway and a small 20th-century ashlar oculus. The left window was originally positioned higher above two blocked 2-light stone-mullioned cellar windows, with the sill of the window above lowered. The first floor and the lower bay to the right have 20th-century casements. At the extreme right of the higher section is a small inglenook window. The rear of the house retains a small 2-light wood-mullioned window, and the rear wing extends from the left.
Inside, there is a large inglenook fireplace with a cambered bressumer and a 17th-century panelled salt cupboard. There is also an altered large open fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer and a bread oven, along with stop-chamfered beams throughout.
