Description

The Barn at Bankhouse Farm is an early 18th-century threshing barn located in Lower Tadmarton. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and originally featured a thatched roof, which is currently covered with corrugated iron sheeting. The barn is a single storey and has ashlar quoins.

On the west elevation, there is a large threshing opening with a timber lintel and ashlar jambs, accompanied by double doors at the right end, with a single breather on either side. To the left of the left breather, there is a section of rebuilt stone walling. The south elevation is blank. The east elevation features a large threshing opening at eaves level, also with a timber lintel and ashlar jambs, flanked by double plank doors. There is one breather to the left and two breathers to the right. The north elevation has a single ground floor opening with a timber lintel and door, as well as a loft doorway above it, also with a timber lintel and door.

Inside, the barn has whitewashed walls and retains its original timber roof structure, which supports remnants of the original thatch. The roof features pegged wooden trusses with tie beams and collars, along with a double row of purlins and many original rafters. This barn is a large and impressive example of local stone vernacular style farm buildings, well-preserved and retaining most of its original architectural features and structure.
