Description
This is a cottage, likely dating from the 16th century. It is constructed of coursed, random rubble and has a brick stack at the right end. The roof is thatched. The cottage has a single-unit plan and comprises a single storey plus an attic. The front elevation, facing the road, features two two-light casement windows with wooden lintels on the ground floor. A large, circular bread oven projects from the right-hand side, also thatched. An eyebrow dormer in the attic accommodates a two-light casement window. The main entrance is at the rear of the property.
Inside, the cottage retains stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and joists, a plank door, a wooden winder stair with a straight flight, and an upper cruck in the bedroom. According to Wood-Jones's survey of traditional domestic architecture in the Banbury region, published in 1963, the cottage demonstrates typical vernacular features of the area.
