Description

Mayfield Cottage is a building that likely dates back to the 16th century and was originally two cottages, now functioning as a single house. The left third of the elevation features regular coursed rubble ironstone, while the right side is made of random rubble ironstone, separated by ironstone quoins. The cottage has a thatched roof with three brick stacks located at the gable ends and along the ridge above the line of quoins. The left gable has stone coping.

The building has a three-unit plan and is a single storey plus attic, with a three-window range. On the left, there is a two-centered arched doorway with a hood mould and stops, leading to a plank door. The ground floor includes a two-light casement window to the left of the door, a 20th-century window, and another two-light casement on the right. The attic features two-light swept casements, with the central casement having lead cames and crown glass.

The rear elevation mainly consists of two-light casements, some of which also have crown glass. The ground floor has a bay window with a hipped slate roof at the left end, which has a cellar beneath it. The central window features a heavy wood frame under a flat arch with a keystone, and the casements open inwards.

Inside, the cottage includes a kitchen, hall, and parlour. The kitchen has a large bread oven at the left end. The hall features a stop-chamfered beam and chamfered joists, along with a fireplace that has a chamfered bressumer. The parlour also has a stop-chamfered beam. A straight flight of stairs with windows is located to the left of the rear entrance. The roof structure consists of through purlins, rafters pegged at the apex, and collars.
